Laying Out the Garments

My junior year of High School I developed a small fascination for royalty and its history (if not evident through this blog!) During winter break a few weeks ago I stumbled across the film Young Victoria, which depicted the first bit of the life of the longest ruling monarch in English history.

After twenty-one years of marriage to the love of her life, Price Albert of Saxe-Couburg and Gotha, her husband (spoiler alert! forgive me!) passes away without all too much notice.


And yet, for the next (nearly) forty years of her life until her passing at age 81, Queen Victoria made the conscious decision to prepare him room. With each new day Victoria insisted that his garments be laid out neatly on his bed, reset for the night, and then repeated at the break of the new morning.


I cannot imagine a more literal representation of a life of devotion.

We ought to live our lives like this; with devotion displayed daily. 


The Queen could have decided to set up a few portraits and memorabilia to glance at every now and then (and perhaps she did!), or simply visit his grave from time to time. Nevertheless, she chose to actively invite him in with each new day and experience a bit more of his presence.


A relationship with your King doesn't involve checking in every once in while; it necessitates drawing Him in everyday and expressing our devotion through the pursuit.
